Does anyone have any statistics about the distribution of handsets currently on the Japanese market? I'm interested what percentage of handsets support xhtml.

All Japanese handsets support xhtml in their closed browsers (i-mode, EZWeb, Yahoo!Keitai)

Docomo has a specific flavour of xhtml, which is pretty consistent over its phones.

Old Japanese handsets do not support XHTML. For instance, it wasn't until docomo's FOMA (3G) lineup that they introduced XHTML support.

I wanted to know what percentage of active handsets support XHTML. Based on subscriber statistics, I'm guessing about 95% of them do. I've summarized my results in XHTML support and Japanese Carriers.
Sorry, I thought you were refering to devices which are still sold in the Japanese market.

With the exception of Willcom (which opts for C-HTML), all devices released in the past 3 years support some flavor of xHTML. Since all of these devices are 2G anyway (i.e.- very slow), and also judging on the traffic I get in my services (which, admittedly are targeted mainly to Docomo users), I would say we're talking about less than 1% actual traffic.
