I had WiTopia, and VyprVpn is free with a Giganews Platinum or Diamond plan, which I happened to have, too.

I just connected with WiTopia via the 3G network on my Softbank iPhone 4S. I'm also using VyprVPN, so you might want to check that out.

I just downloaded the app for the iPhone and my PC. I tethered my PC to my iPhone using the app, and it works like a charm!

I deleted my i.softbank.jp account, and that made a big difference for me. I am now getting better battery life.

I noticed right away that my ringer volume was higher--which was a good thing. I agree with you that my music sounds louder, too. Overall, there's definitely an improvement with the volume in iOS 5, I would say.
